CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

CHLOE

Even though when Zack had asked, Chloe had said she would tell her sisters, as yet she’d not found a way to.

They were aware of his absence, of course. They’d jumped onto that fact as if it was the good news bulletin at the end of a broadcast. For now, she’d said he was on holiday. She didn’t want further questions or to have to expand. Not yet.

The truth was that she was conducting her own little experiment in the hope of making some sense of Zack’s revelations. When she’d thought back on her hospital stay, she remembered the nights when she’d felt like her entire recovery had reversed. If what he was saying held any truth, then anytime now she was going to end up feeling horrible. While in hospital, there had been definite moments when she’d felt okay and others when she’d felt like her batteries had been unplugged without warning. Whether those two states of being were related to Zack being close by or not, she had no way of knowing. Not when she hadn’t been included in this silly theory at the time. So far, she’d been feeling okay, which put paid to Zack’s suggestion. Unless he was continuing to lurk in a street close by.

The other thing she’d like to investigate more was his theory that their hearts had come from the same accident. That the hearts had previously been man and wife. She wasn’t certain how he could ever have found that out when those details were kept confidential. But without contacting him for more information, she wasn’t sure how she’d ever know. All she knew was what he’d explained but he hadn’t given her any specifics, not even the names of the couple. There were alarm bells going off about the whole thing. It reminded her of the scams where someone was seduced by a holiday romance and then subsequently paid out large sums of money, never to see the person they’d fallen in love with again. In a similar way, she felt she’d been duped. She’d been led along a path with unsaid promises that had been strong enough to make her fall in love, only to find it was a mirage at the end.

However tempting it was to find out what the truth might be, Chloe wanted to get her life back to some sense of normality. But after having spent so long at hospital in recent months, she’d forgotten what that might look like. She’d visited the art gallery to see her friend Rowan, but hadn’t filled her in on the details of what she’d thought was her latest romance. Instead she tried to concentrate on the different aspects of her recovery.

In a week, she’d be past the three-month post-surgery mark. That was the stage at which her sternum should have healed enough to do more physical activities. Perhaps heading to the local swimming pool to find out when the quietest periods were so she would be able to go at her own pace would be a start.
